Come join us in celebrating the retirement of Mr. Richard Hastings on Wednesday June 3rd at the Climbing Wall. From 8:30 to 3:30 Richard will have an array of activities set up for students and parents to demonstrate their balance, strength, and agility. This is a chance for us all to say thank you to a man who has dedicated almost 4 decades of his life to educating children. He is now completing his tenth year of teaching at M’KIS.

This Friday, May 15th is a school-wide (ES, MS & HS) Alternate Dress Day sponsored by MYGO to fundraise money to go towards the Nepal earthquake relief support. Please wear the colors red and blue which are the Nepalese national colors on Friday and give generously to show your support for relieving the plight of the Nepalese people impacted by this recent disaster. Thank you for your support to this important cause!

Busing:
Students up to grade 2 will not be released from the bus unless a responsible adult is there to pick them up. If a responsible adult is not at the pick up point, students will be returned to the school and parents will be contacted.
In the morning, buses will not allow ES students to disembark until 7:50 when supervision is available.

What an excellent Reading Week! Thanks to all for your support in celebrating the many different types of reading that we all partake in: print, online, symbols, social media, audio, etc. It was also great to see/hear that so many classes Dropped Everything And Read on Friday from 2:45-2:55. I hope you all had a chance to pick up some reading material at the Book Fair and that you all enjoyed the delightful storytelling of Tanya Batt - she truly is engaging and inspiring!

In your child's homework folder tonight, you will receive a "Book Wish List" with 1-3 books listed. These are books that your child showed interest in. You are not at all obligated to purchase these books, but this list might help your selections if you had planned to purchase books for your child's at home library. M'KIS Reaches Out to Help Our Neighbours
Due to the recent flooding in Malaysia the M'KIS Student Service Club - MYGO (Malaysian Global Outreach) has organized two fundraising events for this week. The first is a bake sale that will take place after school in the breezeway on Wednesday, January 21st. We will also be having an Alternate Dress Day on this coming. Students are asked to wear Malaysian colors of Red, White, Blue and Yellow. This is not on the school calendar as it is being planned in direct response to this disaster. Please let us all join together to provide relief to our Malaysian neighbors.

The International Thespian Society is bringing to you an acting workshop called "The Theatre for the Young: FROM PAGE TO STAGE", where you can build on your skills in Drama and practice performing in a skit to get you ready for upcoming performances, or if you just want to have fun! Dear Parents of Mr. Murdoch’s PE Class,
This letter is in reference to the need for Mr. Murdoch to return to New Zealand mid-year, due to family circumstances. A situation has occurred wherein Mr. Murdoch needs to return to New Zealand permanently and his last day at M’KIS will be on Friday, December 19th, 2014. While we are all sad to see him leave, we know that this decision was made with the best intent and interests of his family in mind.
When students return to school on Monday, January 12th, 2015 from the School Holiday break your child’s class will have a new PE teacher, Mrs. Leah Adcock. Mrs. Adcock has good experience in early primary and has taught PE classes at her previous school as well as yoga and dance. She will be a welcome addition to the PE teaching team. She comes to us from Australia. Mr. Murdoch will be in close contact with Mrs. Adcock over the next few weeks sharing information about the program and your children’s learning.

Dear Families,
Students in Grades K-3 will soon begin using Talking About Touching: A Personal Safety Curriculum. This program teaches children skills that will help them keep safe from dangerous or abusive situations. Children will also learn how to ask for help when they need it.
Over the next few weeks, there will be a series of letters posted on the classroom blog that provide information about how you can help your child learn and practice safety rules taught in the classroom lessons. Children learn more about safety and are more likely to follow safety rules when they have multiple opportunities to practice and talk about safety with their family. I’d like to encourage you to help your child learn and practice safety rules. Some of the rules that we’ll be discussing include traffic safety, fire safety, what to do if you are ever lost, the importance of always asking permission before going anywhere with anyone, and the difference between safe and unsafe touches.
Please note the following information:
- We have a Family Education Night scheduled on Wednesday, 19 November, at which time we will discuss the safety curriculum and watch a video called “What do I Say Now? How to Protect Your Child from Sexual Abuse”. If you are unable to attend this meeting, you can check out the video from school to watch at home. It will show you how to teach and reinforce safety skills taught in the lessons.

ES Student Supervision and Safety Protocol
M’KIS requires that all elementary students be directly supervised at all times when on campus. Running and outdoor voices are acceptable in the courtyard and on the fields but are not appropriate in the hallways, breezeways, cafeteria, or classrooms. The Elementary School Office is the main place to go if plans are disrupted or go away.
Direct supervision is provided by M’KIS Faculty at 7:45 a.m. in the Library and 8:00 a.m. in the Courtyard. After school there is Administrative supervision in the Main Breezeway and the Bus Breezeway. The Library is open and supervision is provided until 4:30 p.m. Students should be picked up within a reasonable time at the completion of their activities. (5 to 10 minutes)
Student Information
The ES Administration Staff will not share individual student information with any party either over the phone, by e-mail or in person until they have verified the person’s relationship to the child.
Leaving Campus and Early Leaving
The M’KIS Security Team will not allow a child in the Elementary School to leave campus through the front gates at any time unless accompanied by a responsible adult. In the case where a student is leaving early they will need to provide an Early Departure Slip issued at time of leaving signed by either the ES Office or the Health Office. We also require a note from a parent to authenticate the authority of nannies if they need to pick up a child. If a child's regular pick-up procedure fails the teacher will supervise/problem solve to ensure the child's safety.
Entering Campus
Students are required to walk or carry all scooters, bicycles and rolling toys once they are inside the school gates.
ASA:
Parents are responsible for ensuring that changes in their child’s regular routines are communicated to the child, their caretakers, the ES Office and their child’s teacher/ASA provider. If these instructions should change all parties need to be informed.
Supervision for all after school events is the responsibility of the provider. The provider will ensure that all students in their care are safely picked up. If there is a problem they will bring the child to the ES Office. If the ES Office is closed (4:30 p.m.) they will take responsibility for ensuring that the child gets safely into the hands of the next caregiver.

Faculty Children

MKIS Counselors Kalei Brumsickle and Jill Lowe will facilitate two Love & Logic parenting courses beginning in November 2014. This course is designed to teach parents the skills that will enable their child to learn responsibility, make choices, and face consequences. Parents think, react, and deal with children in a loving and logical manner. When a child is given a task, makes their own choices, and fails, the consequences for their decisions are given with love and empathy from parents. The child is required to think about and deal with the consequences of their behavior. The method uses humor, hope, and empathy to build up the adult/child relationship, emphasizes respect and dignity for both children and adults, provides real limits in a loving way, and teaches consequences and healthy decision making.
The 5-session early childhood course is designed for parents whose children are under age 6. It will be offered during the month of November from 8:45 to 10:45 am in the Meeting Room (old New Multipurpose room, on the ground floor across from the climbing wall. The dates are Tuesday November 11th, 18th, 25th, Tuesday December 2nd, and 9th. There will be a charge of RM50 for a personal Parent Workbook.
The second course is designed for parents whose children are ages 7 through teens. It is seven sessions long and will be offered on Tuesdays beginning in January 2015, also from 8:45 to 10:45 in the Meeting Room (old New Multipurpose room). The dates are Tuesday January 20th, 27th, February 10th, 17th, 24th, March 3rd and 10th. There will be a fee of RM50 for Parent Workbook.
If you are interested in attending either session please complete the registration below and drop it in the elementary office with Ms. Guna. We strongly encourage both parents to attend the classes together if at all possible. Maids are also welcome to attend. Hello elementary parents,
Halloween Carnival is coming up! The team this year has put together a great event. Children from KP to grade 5 are invited to dress in their favorite costume to trick-or-treat their way through the halls on the breezeway level, making their way to lots of fun games, DJ and dancing, as well as a photo stage! Light refreshments will be offered in the breezeway as well. We have taken the past two years of suggestions and lots of our own ideas to come up with a simple and fun evening for our children. The entire evening will be spent outdoors, so please keep this in mind when dressing up. The event will take place Friday 31 October from 6:30pm until 8:00pm, meeting first in the breezeway. KP through second grade will go first through the trick-or-treat trail with third grade through fifth invited to start at 6:50. Students must be accompanied by a parent, this is not a drop off event. In previous years each class was assigned tasks to assist with decorating, purchasing candy etc. This year the school has funded the carnival so all of these decorating and purchasing costs are taken care of! However, this is a parent organized event and we depend on volunteers to make the evening a success. If you would like to volunteer before, during or after we would love to have your help! We need volunteers to set up, dress up and hand out candy, make sensory boxes, and help take down decorations after the carnival. This Friday, September 19th is an Alternate Dress Day to support fundraising for the "Building Walls of Wisdom" program. Next month on October 15th-17th we will host the founder of this program which builds schools for children to attend who otherwise could not attend school due to the extreme poverty they live with. The goal of "Building Walls of Wisdom" is to eradicate poverty through education. Please support this program by providing a recommended donation of RM5 (or more if you can) to wear your alternate dress this coming Friday. We are asking that you wear any shirt that recognizes your favorite charity or social cause. If you do not have such a shirt than wear a blue colored shirt as this color is dominant in the "Building Walls of Wisdom" program. Enjoy your alternate dress day and thanks for donating to this important cause.

Sun Yoga KL will be offering a FREE trial Kids Yoga Class after school on Friday, 5 Septemberfor students from K - Grade 3 in the Activity Room.
Students who are interested to attend this trial class must return the permission slip to me by tomorrow, Thursday.
During the Paid ASA registration fair recently, some students informed the instructor from Sun Yoga KL that they don't know what Yoga was.

Elementary School Room Parent/s
Purpose/Summary:
As Room Parent/s, you play an important role in coordinating your class needs and promoting a positive, collaborative and supportive relationship between the school and parent community. We appreciate you giving of your time and talents to support your classroom teacher when requested, and to make the parents in your class feel part of, and encourage them to be active in, our school community.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Welcome new families in the class and update & re-circulate the class list
- Work with teacher to create and maintain a current class list
- Stay in close touch with the teacher and recruit parent volunteers for classroom celebrations that the teacher would like assistance with incl. year end class party
- Organize class social functions
- Agree class kitty contributions with parents, collect & and administer the funds
- Keep the teacher in the communication loop with all correspondence
- Organize gifts for Teachers/Teacher’s Assistants (typically Birthdays, Christmas, Teacher Appreciation Day, End of Year Thank You)
- Assist the Parent Association where requested and help organize parent volunteers from the class, especially for Halloween and Fun Fair
- Attend the PA General Meetings and ES Parent Meetings wherever possible
- Direct parents with individual or specific concerns to the appropriate school personnel and protocols
Tip: 2 Room Parents can work very well. If there are 2 (or 3) Room Parents for any given class, we recommend that you nominate a Lead Room Parent. It’s best to discuss and clearly agree who will do what. For example, one person may be prepared to be the Lead Parent, one may want to be the Treasurer. You could also split out coordinating the in-class celebrations from organising the out-of-class socials. Do what works for you!
