Student Led Conferences

It is probably my favourite day of the year when the children can show their parents their learning throughout the year and talk about their favourite pieces of work and how their goals have helped them to learn.  They worked very hard all year to prepare their portfolio both in the binder and on their google site. Hopefully it was a valuable time for both the students and their parents.  Please check out the photos from the student led conferences below:

Owl Pellets!

Grade 3 had an exciting week as we finally got our hands into the much awaited Owl Pellets.  Our current Science Unit is on the Human Body and we have focused mostly on the skeletal system.  Our guiding question for the owl pellet discovery was: 

How are human skeletal bones/joints similar and/or different from those found in owl pellets?

The Owl Pellets are baked at very high temperatures to kill all bacteria.  We order the pellets from the US (http://pellet.com/) and they have been a part of the Grade Three program for almost ten years.  It is one activity that kids will never forget!

We carefully opened the pellets and used toothpicks to examine the contents.  These pellets come from barn owls and the most frequent animals that they eat are mice, rodents, rats, etc...

Royal Selangor Pewter Factory

We just came back from the Royal Selangor Pewter Factory and had a great visit.  Grade 3 has been going to this factory as a field trip for many years now and we always enjoy it.  The museum is well designed and has a lot of interesting artifacts to see and read about.  I also feel that it is great for kids as the sensory experiences really enable them to understand the weight and sound of various metals, including tin.


We learned a lot about Tin and its historical significance to the development of Kuala Lumpur as a city.  This wrapped up our SS unit and enabled us to connect a lot of our learning to things that we could see and touch.

The gift shop is always popular and has a lot of great gift ideas.

What did we learn?

• When Yong Koon arrived in British Malaya it was at the same time as the growth of the mining and tin industry. He helped provide many opportunities for the people who lived in Kuala Lumpur during this time.

• We learned that pewter is actually tin combined with antimony and copper.

• We learned how the company came to begin and how it has expanded into other countries worldwide.

• We watched tin being melted down and formed into various items in their workshop factory.

A special story about the famous teapot by Datin Paduka Chen Mun Kuen. (She is the grandaughter of Yong Koon, the founder).

Spring Concert / Duathlon

 This was another busy week!

First we had the Spring Concert which was well done and a treat to watch as we wind up the year.  There is something about all those little voices in unison with great words and actions that make a concert such an enjoyable experience.  Well done to all the third graders!

Then we had our Duathlon on Friday afternoon.  Unfortunately, the thunder and lightening didn't cooperate and it ended before all got a chance to compete.  All of the kids worked hard and showed great cooperation despite not getting to race (perhaps it was the popsicles that followed that helped?!)

Information Writing

We have finally finished our information writing and the final copies are outside the classroom on our bulletin board.  Please have a look if you get a chance.  The students worked over a month on the same piece and learned how to incorporate research into their own knowledge about their topic as well as how to write like an information writer which is quite different than narrative and opinion. The pictures below are a few of the celebration we had with Ms. Turner's Grade 1 class.  The kids enjoyed reading to the younger ones and it made them feel quite proud of their writing.

Spring Concert!

Merdeka Square Field Trip

On Thursday, our class traveled to Merdeka Square (or Independence Square) to learn about how KL became the city that it is today. Our Social Studies unit is entitled, "KL: Yesterday and Today" and this trip fits perfectly into our learning.

With the help of two fantastic tour guides, we were guided through the KL City Gallery and watched an entertaining 3 minute video with light show on a scale model of our city.  We learned about the new tall building that will be built soon as well!

Then we were taken to the textile museum, theater, church, river bank, and many other historic spots.  We were given lots of knowledge and stories about how tin mining and the joining of the Gombak and Klang River significantly impacted the tin industry which in turn encouraged development in this area.

One of our essential questions for this unit is: "How does a community's location and resources determine growth?" - I think that the students are well equipped to answer this question based on what they learned on the field trip.

Mean, Median, Mode, Range

We are working on Data Management in Math and today we learned about Mean, Median, Mode and Range when we are given a set of data.


To help us remember what to do, we watched and learned from these toads:




We did some examples as a class and here is a snapshot of what our work looked like. It might help when reviewing for the homework.

Edible Science !

We have come to the end of our unit on Matter.

We learned about the three states of matter, how matter changes under various kinds of temperatures as well as how phase changes occur.

To celebrate and culminate the unit, we decided to make butter and ice cream!!

Making Butter

We watched a liquid change to solid ! If you put whipping cream into a sealed jar and shake, shake, shake, you will get butter!

 

 

 

Making Ice Cream

To make ice cream, all you need is some:
sugar, salt, ice, milk (1/2 and 1/2), vanilla extract (for vanilla ice cream) and 2 plastic bags (1 large, 1 small).

We loved making the ice cream and especially loved eating it.  We ate science!

Reading Week

It is reading week in our school and we are busy doing reading activities.

One teacher in our school sent out a survey with 8 of her students favorite books - she is a March Madness fan and decided to create a bracket of her students favorite books and have rounds where each week we vote to see which book will win.  The school is voting each week through a google survey. Then each week we see if our predictions of what book will win came true or not.
