Friday was a busy day in Grade 3. We had our final writing celebration for our Opinion Writing Unit. Students over the last few months have been involved in writing persuasive essays, editorials and petitions while learning great skills for organizing their thoughts, research, ideas, and opinions.
The final part of our unit was having them choose causes in the world that they felt passionate about. We had a mixed selection of endangered animals, poverty, pollution, and global warming. After being placed in their groups, they had to decide on who their audience was and what kind of opinion piece they were going to write. They realized that they can have different audiences in their groups in order to have their opinion expressed to many different kinds of organizations and people.
They worked independently while being their own "Job Captains" and were in charge of how they were going to take their piece from brainstorming to final copy. They learned in the previous entries how to do these various things and had to figure out to write it independently while using all of the strategies learned in class. They had 5 classes to do this and all finished successfully by the end.
The celebration was a sort of "Speakers Corner" where each Grade Three class gathered on the courtyard and took turns being "on the stage" reading their piece to the other grade three classes who were taking notes and giving feedback.

The photos at the end are of our Valentines Day party. A BIG Thanks to Fara, Kyle's mom, and Davin's mom for helping and making the most creative and interesting treats for us. In addition to the treats, we had a craft to make where we got to put all of our valentines day cards inside. It was a great day!
