What a fantastic morning to celebrate the end of our Indigenous Peoples Unit and bring together a lot of the learning that occurred over the last couple of months.
The weather was nice and cool and the kids were excited.
A pow wow is a North American Native American ceremony involving feasting and dancing - we did a bit of both. We changed the name to include the cultural celebration part because we really did focus a lot on indigenous people of the world. We learned about South American tribes that the Munro's lived with when they lived in Guatemala. We listened to Davin present about the indigenous people of Nepal. We learned about the Orang Asli from our very own Malaysia and many others through class presentations, internet research and personal experiences and stories.
The latter part of our unit does focus on North American tribes - we separated into four regions in our class groups - Eastern Woodlands, Northwest Coast, Plains & Southwest. We learned about wampums for currency and used these as classroom rewards. Each member of the tribe had a job and responsibilities. We learned specifically about food, shelter, clothing and culture within each region and compared similarities and differences within. We are currently in the process of completing a big research project where we are making e-books with another Grade 3 class. This will be completed shortly.
The pow wow/cultural celebration was a great recognition of the students' hard work and learning throughout the past few weeks. Please enjoy the photos - thanks to Priti for taking some great shots and Julie Munro for her album of the whole event.
